A. Y. Crouse Dies Saturday
A. Y. Crouse, 83, well-known Rogersville resident and a veteran of years of service with Company K, died at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 1953, in Saratoga, Fla., where he was vacationing with friends. He had been in poor health since last November. A son of the late Enos G. and Mary Elizabeth Bennett Crouse, the deceased was born Sept. 26, 1869 in Center Township. He resided almost all his life in Franklin and Center Townships. Mr. Crouse first joined Company K, 10th Pennsylvania Infantry, when a student at Waynesburg College and served in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War from 1898 to 1899. A platoon sergeant, he was ordered back to active service and served with the company on the Mexican border in 1916. He went overseas with Company K, 110th Infantry, in 1917, when the company was activated during World War I. A regimental color sergeant, he held the rank of sergeant major. He remained with the company until mustered out on May 23, 1919. While serving in the Philippines, Mr. Crouse pitched for the 10th Infantry baseball team, which won the championship of the Eighth Army Corps at Mainla in 1899. Mr. Crouse never married. He taught school for a number of years at various places in and out of Greene County. He was a member of the Waynesburg V. F. W. post and of James Farrell Post No. 330, American Legion, Waynesburg. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Alice Throckmorton of Rogersville, and one brother, Fred Crouse of Holbrook.
CROUSE - Funeral services for A. Y. Crouse of Rogersville, who died Sat., Feb. 28, 1953, will be held in the Scott Funeral Home, Rogersville, at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, with the Rev. John Thompson and the Rev. Franklin Hallman officiating. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery, Rogersville, with full graveside military rites conducted by James Farrell Post No. 330, American Legion, Waynesburg.
