Mr. John J. Fordyce, a well-known citizen of this city, and formerly a member of Co. F. 11th O. V. I., died rather suddenly of dropsy of the heart. Mr. Fordyce, although he has not been well for some three months past, was not considered in any imminent danger, and his sudden death was quite a shock to every one. He was comparatively a young man and leaves a wife and two children.
Miami Democrat, October 9, 1880 (Miami County, OH)
Fordyce - On Thursday evening, Oct. 7, 1880, at his residence in this city, of Dropsy of the Heart, John J, Fordyce, aged 36 years, 6 months and 8 days. The deceased, who was the son of the late Uri and Margaret Fordyce, was born near Casstown, in this county. He was a soldier in the war, a member of Co. F, 110th O. V. I. On the 21st of December 1869, he was married to Emma Hardenbrook, of this city, who, now, with two children, a son and a daughter, are left to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband and father. Mr. Fordyce was a valuable and worthy man, and and industrious and exemplary citizen, whose loss will be severely felt outside of his little family. Early in the great Temperance movement he engaged in it most heartily, and at about the same time began anew a regular attendance upon the preaching of the gospel giving his friends to hope that he had reconsecrated himself to God. Up to within a few hours of his death, neither he, his family, nor his physician felt any alarm as to his situation, and not till death was upon him did he give up the earnest struggle for life. Few death scenes have been fuller of sad [illegible] stricken man yields to the call of the pale messenger [illegible] the devoted wife with a few friends gather about his bedside, his little son Walter, a lad of ten years or less, falls on his knees and with a cry that seems to come from a breaking heart, says, "Please God don't take my Papa!" May he who tempers the wind to the shorn lamb keep and protect those whom He has so deeply afflicted, and may they be enabled to say God doeth all things well.
