WHITING, April 1.-- Mrs. Mary D. Fordyce, 76, pioneer resident of Whiting and widow of James J. Fordyce, a Civil War veteran, passed away yesterday at her home, 1934 Shrage avenue. A resident of Whiting for the past 40 years, Mrs. Fordyce was recognized as the oldest member of the Whiting Relief Corps and was called the "Mother of the Corps." Surviving are four children--two sons, Harry, World War veteran, and Frank, and two daughters, Mrs. William Shade of Whiting, and Mrs. D.R. Johnson, of Hammond. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. William Smith, of Gary. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Schlater Funeral Home where the Rev. A.S. Warriner, of the M.E. Church will officiate. Interrment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Hammond. Services, it has been announced, will be conducted by the American Legionand the Whiting Relief Corps.
