Elijah W. Hartley
Elijah W. Hartley, aged 89 years, well known farmer of Perry township, died Sunday, October 9, 1927, at his home near Mt. Morris. Mr. Hartley was born June 13, 1838, near Fairmont, W. Va., but has spent most of his life in the Mt. Morris district and was one of the most highly respected citizens of Perry township. He was a member of the Shannon Run Methodist Episcopal church and had been a leader in the work of his church for close to fifty years. He was married November 3, 1859, to Sarah Headley, who died several years ago, and to this union were born nine children, six sons and three daughters, namely: Mrs. David Lemley, of Mt. Morris; C. S. Hartley, of Kirby; Luther Hartley, of Wadestown, W. Va.; J. L. Hartley, of Waynesburg; E. E. Hartley, of Mt. Morris; Rev. W. T. Hartley, of Wilmerding; Mrs. Attie Shriver, of Rogersville; Mrs. Kughn Barrickman, of Morgantown, W. Va., and John Hartley, of Mt. Morris. He also leaves 25 grandchildren. Short funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at his late residence, with further services at the Shannon Run church at 2 o'clock. The services were conducted by Rev. H. M. Jenkins, of Kirby, assisted by Mr. Hartley's son, Rev. W. T. Hartley. Interment was in the Cedar Grove cemetery at Mt. Morris. Democrat Messenger, October 21, 1927 (Greene County, PA)
ELIJAH W. HARTLEY Elijah W. Hartley, an aged and highly respected citizen, died at his home near Mt. Morris, Sunday, October 9, aged 89 years, of infirmities incident to advanced years. Mr. Hartley was born June 13, 1838, near Fairmont, W. Va., but later the family removed to Greene county. November 3, 1859 he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Headley, whose death occurred several years ago. Nine children survive: Jesse L. Hartley, Waynesburg; Mrs. David Lemley, E. E., and John Hartley, of Kirby; Luther Hartley, Wadestown, W. Va.; Rev. W. T. Hartley, Wilmerding, Pa.; Mrs. Attie Shriver, Rogersville, and Mrs. Kuhn Barrickman, Morgantown, W. Va. He also leaves twenty-five grandchildren. Mr. hartley was a member of the Shannon Run church and had been class leader for almost fifty years. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon in the Shannon Run church. Interment in Cedar Grove cemetery, Mt. Morris. Waynesburg Republican, October 20, 1927 (Greene County, PA) |
