Daughter of Local Attorney Dies Monday
Mrs. Virginia Montgomery McDermott, 53, of 419 Yale Avenue, Swarthmore, Pa., a native of Waynesburg, and who spent her early life here, died unexpectedly at her home Monday morning, July 30, 1962. He death was caused by a pulmonary embolism and came as a distinct shock to her friends and relatives as she had been in apparent good health. Mrs. McDermott was the wife of Dr. William C. McDermott, head of the Department of romance languages at the University of Pennsylvania and was the daughter of Atty. and Mrs. Walter C. Montgomery, of N. Richhill street, Waynesburg. She was born September 4, 1909 and was graduated from Waynesburg High School in the class of 1928. She was graduated fromGoucher College in 1932 and that same year was married to Dr. McDermott. Following their marriage they lived in Meadville, Pa., Baltimore and Bethlehem, Pa., before moving to Swarthmore. He had taught at Allegheny College and Lehigh University and did graduate work at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore before teaching at the University of Pennsylvania. Mrs. mcDermott was active in civic circles at Swarthmore, where she was past president of the Swarthmore unit of the Pennsylvania League of Women Voters; a member of the Republican Women's Council of Chester County and a member of the Women's Club of Swarthmore. Among other activities she also taught a Sunday School class at the Friends School in Swarthmore. In addition to her husband and parents she is survived by one daughter, Miss Grace M. McDermott, who will be a Freshman at the University of Pennsylvania this coming autumn. Also by two brothers, Thomas Ford Montgomery, recently of Pittsburgh, but now of Baytown, Texas, near Houston, and Walter C. Montgomery, Jr., of Boulder City, Colo. A third brother, Hugh G. Montgomery is deceased. Private funeral services will be held at one-thirty p.m. Thursdau, August 2, at the Oliver Bair Funeral Home, 1820 Chestnut street, Philadelphia.
