James B. Meighen
Gas company retiree, genealogy collector James Brice Meighen, 84, of Sampson Street, Monongahela, died Tuesday, October 12, 1999, in Monongahela Valley Hospital, Carroll Township. He was born April 21, 1915, in Waynesburg, a son of Franklin Whitlatch and Mary Luvina Huffman Meighen. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Monongahela, where he held various offices and taught Sunday school for about 20 years. At one time, Mr. Meighen was a chairman of Zoning Board Appeals and Planning Commission and Redevelopment Authority for the City of Monongahela. He was a member of a group instrumental in the early promotion of the Mon Valley Expressway. He was a member of Henry M. Phillips Lodge 337, F&AM, Royal Arch Chapter 249, McKean Commandry 80 and BPO Elks 455, all of Monongahela, and Syria Temple of Pittsburgh. He was honored by being the first president of Monongahela Chapter 2563 of AARP. Mr. Meighen graduated from Waynesburg College in 1938 with a bachelor's degree in natural science. He retired from People's Natural Gas Co., Monongahela division office, in 1970. After retirement, he worked for Fox Oil & Gas Co. as a geological consultant. Mr. Meighen had one of the largest single collections of local genealogical data in the region. His collection traces back 24 generations to King Edward III of England. Surviving are his wife, Helen Elizabeth Murdock Meighen, whom he married June 23, 1944; three daughters, Nancy Ann Biel of Hilton Head, S.C., Mary Elizabeth Carnes of Colleyville, Texas, and Helen Marie Ullestad of Fallsington; eight grandchildren, Dana Leigh Shepherd, Tracy Elizabeth and James Gordon Biel, Heather Elizabeth, Ross Christopher and Jennifer Carnes and Matthew Donald and Jessica Ullestad; and two great-grandsons. Deceased are a son, John Murdock Meighen, who died April 12, 1985; and a sister, Anna Gordon Meighen.
MEIGHEN - Friends of James Brice Meighen of Sampson Street, Monongahela, who died Tuesday, October 12, 1999, will be received from 7 to 9 Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in L.M. Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 16, with the Rev. Richard Hartman officiating.
