GALESBURG -- Carolyn Ruth Oakman, 68, of 1547 N. Cedar St. died at 10:53 a.m. Wednesday,
June 18, 1997, at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
Born Nov. 4, 1928, in Smithshire to Harvey Trigg and Ruth C. Fordyce Thompson, she married John J. Oakman on June 10, 1972, in Galesburg. He survives. Also surviving are two sons, Mark E. Oakman of Galesburg and Charles H. Wilkins of Stanton, Mich.; two daughters, Bonnie Yard of Galesburg and Bonnie Hammond of Squaw Valley, Calif.; seven grandchildren; one brother, John A. Thompson of Bethesda, Md.; and two sisters, Eloise Staggs of Yates City and Marie Eberle of Edwardsville. She was a reading specialist teacher for Galesburg School District 205 for 33 years, retiring in June 1994. She graduated from Western Illinois University with a bachelor's and a master's degree. She was a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association and the Rebecca Parke Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Galesburg. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Kermit W. Petersen will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
