Mrs. Mary Clovis Smith

Mrs. Mary Clovis Smith, aged 68 years, was found dead in her apartment in New Concord, Ohio, Wednesday, March 6, 1940, by neighbors who went to investigate after failure to notice the woman around the apartment as usual. WHile news of the death came to her relatives here before a complete investigation had been made, deathwas believed due to a heart attack.

The deceased was born at Jollytown, a daughter of Marion and Sara Eakin Clovis, deceased, and was the widow of J. B. Smith. She removed to New Concord 26 years ago after spending her early life in the Pine Bank and Jollytown district. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Clyde Haines, of Pine Bank, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Alpha Hoy and Mrs. Mattie Jones, of Pine Bank; Mrs. Bessie Scott, of Holbrook; F. H. Clovis of Prosperity, and John and Jacob Clovis, of Waynesburg. She was a member of the New Concord Methodist Church.

Mrs. Mary Avaline Clovis Smith, aged 67 years, widow of Joseph Smith, of New Concord, Ohio, died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage at her home Wednesday, March 6, 1940. Mrs. Smith, who lived alone, had been dead about 14 hours when found by neighbors who investigated after failing to see her about the house as usual.

A daughter of Marion and Sarah Eakin Clovis, she was born April 15, 1871, at Jollytown and resided in Jackson Township until 27 years ago when she and her husband removed to New Concord, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Smith celebrated their golden wedding anniversary June 8, 1939, and Mr. Smith's death occurred September 14, 1939. Mrs. Smith was a member of the New Concord Methodist Church. She was the mother of two children, a daughter, Lena, wife of D. Clyde Haines, of Pine Bank, and a son, Dr. Carl Smith, who died February 10, 1939, at Moundsville, W. VA. Besides her daughter and four grandchildren she is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Frank Clovis, of Lone Pine; Jacob E. Clovis and John H. Clovis, of Waynesburg; Mrs. J. L. Scott, of Holbrook; Mrs. George Jones and Mrs. J. F. Hoy, of Pine Bank.

FUNERAL ON SUNDAY FOR MRS. JOSEPH B. SMITH

WAYNESBURG, March 7. - The body of Mary Avaline Clovis Smith, 68, widow of Joseph B. Smith, who died at her home in New Concord, O., Wednesday, March 6, 1940, has been brought to the Ralph B. Scott Funeral Home at Rogersville, where friends will be received. Services will be held there at 2 o'clock Sunday, March 10, in charge of the Rev. Lew F. Johnston, of the Carmichaels Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Pine Bank Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith's death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage. SHe was born April 15, 1872, and was a daughter of Marion and Sarah Eakin Clovis. Her husband, Joseph B. Smith, died September 14, 1939. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary June 8, 1939.

Mrs. Smith was the mother of two children, Mrs. Clyde Haines, of Pine Bank and Dr. Carl C. Smith, of Moundsville, W. Va., who died February 10, 1939. Also surviving are four grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. J. L. Scott, of Holbrook; Mrs. George Jones and Mrs. J. F. Hoy, of Pine Bank, and three brothers, Frank H. Clovis of Lone Pine; J. E. Clovis and John H. Clovis of Waynesburg.
