C. R. Sproat Dies;
Native of County

Charles Ross Sproat, 82 years, public accountant in Washington for 50 years, died Wednesday, May 8, 1963, in Washington Hospital.

Mr. Sproat was a son of Jacob Staggers Sproat and Harriet Fordyce Sproat, and was born July 13, 1880, near Kirby, Greene County. He attended California Normal School and Waynesburg College.

Mr. Sproat taught in Greene and Fayette County schools for several years; spent six months as a member of the Jefferson Guard at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis; became associated with the Midland Steel Company at Midland; was a traveling representative for International Correspondence School of Scranton; and worked as a civil service employee under the direction of the Treasury Department of the United States Government. Before opening an office in Washington, he worked in the accounting department of the American Steel and Wire Company in Cleveland, Ohio, and with Ernst and Ernst certified public accountants, in both their Cleveland and Pittsburgh offices. Having entered the accounting field in 1913, he rounded out his 50th year as a practicing accountant with the 1963 tax season.

On July 19, 1911, Mr. Sproat was united in marriage with Miss Stella Rhodes of Jefferson. They resided in Brownsville and Cleveland, Ohio, before moving to Washington in 1917.

Mr. Sproat was a member of the Church of the Covenant; American Institute Accountants; Pittsburgh Chamber of Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and of Kiwanis Internatonal.

Surviving are his wife and daughter, Jane; four brothers, H. L. Sproat and Noah R. Sproat, both of Waynesburg; Samuel H. Sproat of Washington; William S. Sproat of Girwood, Alaska; and one sister , Miss Anna Sproat of Waynesburg.

Funeral services were held Friday in the Piatt Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. William G. Rusch of the Church of the Covenant and Rev. Theodore D. Taylor.

Charles Ross Sproat of 430 Leonard avenue, died May 8, 1963, in Washington Hospital following a week's illness.

Mr. Sproat was born July 13, 1880, near Kirby in Greene County, one of a family of ten children born to Jacob Stagers and Harriet Fordyce Sproat.

His Greene County common school training was supplemented by courses at California State Normal School and Waynesburg College. He taught in Greene and Fayette County schoolsfor several years; spent six months as a member of the Jefferson Guard at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis; became associated with the Midland Steel Company at Midland; was a traveling representative for International Correspondence Schools of Scranton; and worked as a Civil Service employee under the direction of the Treasury Department of the United States Government. July 19, 1911, Mr. Sproat married Miss Stella Rhodes of Jefferson, Pa.

After living in Brownsville and Cleveland, O., they settled in Washington in 1917.

Mrs. Sproat and their daughter, Jane survive. Also living are the following brothers: H. L. Sproat of Waynesburg; Samuel H. Sproat of Washington; Noah R. Sproat of Waynesburg; William S. Sproat of Girdwood, Alaska; and a sister, Miss Anna M. Sproat of Waynesburg.


SPROAT - Friends of Charles Ross Sproat, 430 Leonard avenue, who died Wednesday, May 8, 1963, will be received at the Piatt Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The funeral service will be conducted Friday, May 10, at 1 p.m., by the Rev. Dr. William G. Rusch of the Church of the Covenant and the Rev. Theodore D. Taylor II of the Third United Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Park Cemetery.
