Oakle Staggers
Graysville farmer retired from Jessop Steel

Oakle (Bill) Staggers, 96, of Graysville, died unexpectedly at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 1, 2003, in his home.

He was born September 11, 1906, in Bristoria, a son of William Thomas and Mattie Belle Coutz Staggers.

Mr. Staggers resided most of his life in the Graysville area and was a member and former trustee of Unity Presbyterian Church in Graysville.

He was a member of the Graysville Volunteer Fire Department and Jessop Club in Washington where he enjoyed attending retiree functions and activities.

Mr. Staggers enjoyed collecting and repairing watches and old clocks and was an avid hunter.

He was a farmer most of his life and enjoyed butchering livestock for friends and neighbors. He was employed at Jessop Steel as a machine operator for 27 years prior to his 1969 retirement.

On October 27, 1929, he married Audrey C. Wells, who died November 5, 1984. On October 6, 1985, he married Ann Bell Haught Harvey, who died October 13, 1999.

Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Schlanz of Graysville; a stepson, George Harvey of Brownsville; four stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Staggers was the last of his immediate family.

Deceased are seven brothers, John, Seaman, Burt, Dewey, Milo, Albert and Stacy Staggers; and a sister, Imogene Staggers McDonough Tustin.
