Greene County's Oldest Resident Dies, Aged 101
Mrs. Martha Ann Remley Wells, Greene County's oldest resident, who celebrated her 101st birthday last October 10, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the Cutty Memorial Home where she had resided since March 13, 1953. She was born October 10, 1854, in Illinois, a daughter of John and Hannah Fordyce Remley. Her father was a carpenter who followed the labor market in plying hi strade, and so the family moved to Greene County when Mrs. Wells was only 11 years old. Most of her life was spent in the Oak Forest and Hargus Creek sections of Center Township. When 22 years old, she was married Sept. 9, 1876, to Robert Wells who died May 22, 1903. While still in her teens she united with the Willow Grove Christian Church and in 1887 transferred her member ship to the Pursley Baptist Church near Oak Forest. Mrs. Wells had lived through five wars in which the United States was engaged - four of them on foreign soil. She was not yet six years old at the outbreak of the Civil War. The followed the Spanish-American War, the two world wars, and the war in Korea during the later years of her lifetime. Mrs. Wells has no close relatives surviving.
WELLS - Friends of Martha Ann Remley Wells of Waynesburg, R. D. 5, who died on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 1956, will be received after 7 p.m. Thursday (today) at the Scott Funeral Service in Rogersville where funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, with Rev. Mrs. Martha Wells Dies At Age Of 101 WAYNESBURG, Jan. 18 - Mrs. Martha Ann Remley Wells, 101, of Waynesburg R.D. 5, formerly of the Hargus Creek and Oak Forest Communities, died at 12:30 p.m. today, in the Curry Memorial Home, Waynesburg R.D. 5, after an illness of four years. She was born October 10, 1854. She celebrrated her 101st birthday at the home last October and was acclaimed Greene County's only living Centenarian. She resided in Missouri during her childhood and came to Greene County when she was 11 years old. She had lived in the two communities until she was taken to the Curry Home in March, 1953. She had been bedfast since she was 97. She was a daughter of the late John and Hannah Fordyce Remley. She was married September 6, 1876, to Robert Wells, who died May 22, 1903.
