Mrs. Mariah Wood
Mrs. Mariah Wood, aged almost 90 years, widow of Jesse Wood, who through the Leonard family traced relationship to General George Washington, first President of the United States, died Saturday night, February 4, at 11:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Harris, near Holbrook. Mrs James Harris [sic] ill for several months, suffering from the infirmities incident to advanced years. She was a daughter of Archibald and Nancy Leonard Fordyce, members of pioneer families of Center township, where she was born March 30, 1832, the third child of a family of 15 children. Her great-grandfather, Archibald Guthrie, was killed in a battle near Pittsburgh during the French and Indian war. Mrs. Wood had been a member of the Christian church for a period of 68 years. In 1855 she was married to Jesse Wood and they resided at Holbrook until 1888, when they removed to Calhoun county, West Virginia, but returned to Holbrook in 1891 and Mr. Wood died there in 1897. Mrs. Wood was the mother of eight children, four of whom survive as follows: W. L. Wood, Silas Wood and Mrs. James Harris, all of Holbrook, and Mrs. Claudie Tustin, of near Waynesburg. Short funeral services were held at the Harris home Monday morning at 10 o'clock, followed by further services in the Willow Grove church. The services were conducted by Rev. D. R.
