Silas Wood, aged 80 years, died Saturday evening, Nov. 25, 1944, at 9:45 o'clock at the home
of his daughter, Mrs. Clive Phillips, of Hiller, Pa., where he had resided for the past two
and one-half years, during which time he had been an invalid.
He was born in Holbrook, Dec. 21, 1863, at the spot where his grandfather, William Wood and his grandmother, Ann Chesney Wood, had settled in 1817. Mr. Wood was a son of Jesse and Mariah Fordyce Wood; of the eight children in the family all are deceased except one sister, Mrs. Clarinda Tustin, of Waynesburg. On May 25, 1892, he was united in marriage to Catherine Fordyce by Dr. A. B. Miller, of Waynesburg College. His wife preceded him in death about two years ago. To this union was born two children, Mrs. Clara Phillips, of Hiller, Pa., and Mrs. Sara Marley, of Philadelphia, both of whom survive. There are three grandsons: Wood Phillips, with the Navy Air Corps, at Hutchinson, Kansas; James Phillips, in the Army Air Corps, V.P.L., at Blacksburg, Va., and Ralph Phillips, of Brownsville. Also a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Wood was a member of the Waynesburg Christian Church and had been a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge. He was a farmer but due to failing health and blindness had not been actively engaged for several years. In 1880, during Mr. Wood's seventeenth year, the family left the home at Holbrook to settle at Grantsville, W. Va., with several other neighbors. Mr. Wood himself made the trip with a team over bad roads and streams with only fords and much heavily wooded land. He always liked to reminisce his first trip as a high spot in his life. From Grantsville he later went to Illinois and Iowa where he spent several years farming and caring for stock. Since 1907 he had lived mostly at the old Wood homestead which he and his wife purchased and built a home on the same spot where he was born.
